During the Local Government New Zealand national conference last week leading demographer Professor Natalie Jackson presented on the issues confronting New Zealand’s ageing population.
The call for a plan on ageing Kiwis was featured on the Stuff website and also on Bernard Hickey’s writing an opinion piece for the NZ Herald.
Indeed, there’s a need for New Zealand to consider demography that’s transitioning rapidly, among others, the ageing strata of the population is one concern that the country should address.
This demographic factor has a potentially big effect on infrastructure service provision and infrastructure management.

Waugh Infrastructure Management invited Professor Natalie Jackson in February 2013 at Timaru to talk and explain in-depth about New Zealand’s demography. Clients from Canterbury and North Otago attended the whole day seminar.
For those who were unable to attend we made a video recording of the seminar.
The second of the three-video series is posted above.
It has a question and answers session with Professor Jackson, which followed the morning session of the seminar on World and New Zealand wide demographic trends.
The seminar audience was composed of infrastructure management practitioners and asset management planning people.
The questions reflect the professional concerns of these groups.
I believe that the issues with the demography that New Zealand is facing may be the same issues that some countries may also have.
Demographic issues could be typical among OECD nations, China, Russia, and parts of Eastern Europe.
Thus, the questions and answers may be transferable across countries and could provide insights to those watching.

The day-long seminar was designed to inform infrastructure management professionals and provoke discussion about the path forward which is not going to be the same as in the past 30-40 years.
