On 22 July, during the Local Government New Zealand national conference, pre-eminent demographer Professor Natalie Jackson presented on the issues relating to New Zealand’s ageing population.
New Zealand’s rapidly changing demography and ageing population are huge issues for the country. They have potentially large impacts on infrastructure management and infrastructure service provision.
I highlighted these issues in my June 2013 Ingenium Conference paper.
In February 2013 Waugh Infrastructure Management invited Professor Natalie Jackson to visit us in Timaru and discuss in depth the issues relating to New Zealand’s demography.
A day-long seminar was held, with our Canterbury and North Otago clients attending.
Because some clients being unable to attend the seminar, we decided to video record the day.
The first of three videos is posted above. This video includes a 15-minute introduction that I delivered.
Then an hour-long session with Professor Jackson, which covers World and New Zealand demographic trends.
Whilst this video is New Zealand focussed, it will be of interest to those looking in from other countries because the demographic issues are common across most of the OECD nations, China, Russia and parts of Eastern Europe.
Please enjoy this video with our compliments.
The day-long seminar was designed to inform infrastructure professionals and provoke discussion about the path forward, which is not going to be the same as the past 30-40 years.
My hope is that you will watch this video and have the same discussions with your infrastructure management colleagues.
